George McGovern was an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. He served as a U.S. Senator from South Dakota from 1963 to 1981. McGovern is best known for his 1972 presidential campaign, where he ran against incumbent President Richard Nixon. His platform focused on issues such as ending the Vietnam War and promoting social justice.
In addition to his political career, McGovern was a World War II veteran and a strong advocate for nutrition and education. After leaving the Senate, he continued to work on various humanitarian efforts, including serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Hunger in the 1990s.
