George H. Thomas
George H. Thomas was a Union general during the American Civil War, known for his strong leadership and strategic skills. Born on July 31, 1816, in Virginia, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Thomas played a crucial role in several key battles, including the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Nashville.
Despite facing challenges due to his Southern heritage, Thomas earned the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga" for his steadfast defense during the battle. After the war, he continued to serve in the military and was involved in various posts until his death on March 28, 1870.
