General Mobile Radio Service
The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed radio service in the United States that allows for two-way communication over short distances. It operates on specific frequencies and is commonly used for personal and family communication, especially in outdoor activities like hiking and camping. GMRS radios typically have higher power limits than other services, enabling longer range communication.
To use GMRS, individuals must obtain a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which does not require a test. GMRS radios can be used in conjunction with Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, but GMRS users can communicate on both GMRS and FRS frequencies, while FRS users can only use FRS frequencies.
