General Ambrose Burnside
General Ambrose Burnside was a Union general during the American Civil War, known for his distinctive facial hair, which led to the term "sideburns." He was born on May 23, 1824, in Liberty, Indiana, and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1847. Burnside played a significant role in several battles, including the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Fredericksburg.
Despite his early successes, Burnside faced criticism for his leadership, particularly after the disastrous defeat at Fredericksburg in December 1862. He later served as the commander of the Department of the Ohio and contributed to the Union's efforts in the Western Theater. Burnside's military career ended in 1863, and he later became a successful businessman and politician.
