Ge'ez script
The Ge'ez script is an ancient writing system that originated in the Horn of Africa, primarily used for the Ge'ez language, which is now mostly liturgical. It is an abugida, meaning each character represents a consonant with an inherent vowel sound that can be modified with diacritics.
Today, the Ge'ez script is used to write several languages, including Amharic and Tigrinya. It consists of over 200 characters, each representing different sounds, and is notable for its unique, angular shapes. The script plays a significant role in the cultural and religious heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
