Gavialidae
The family Gavialidae consists of large, aquatic reptiles known as gharials and false gharials. These unique crocodilians are characterized by their long, narrow snouts, which are adapted for catching fish, their primary diet. Gavialidae are primarily found in the rivers of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
Gharials, specifically, are critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. They prefer freshwater habitats and are excellent swimmers, using their streamlined bodies to navigate through rivers. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these fascinating reptiles and their natural environments, highlighting the importance of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems.
