Gastroesophageal Junction
The gastroesophageal junction is the area where the esophagus meets the stomach. This junction plays a crucial role in digestion, allowing food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach while preventing stomach contents from flowing back up.
This region is surrounded by a ring of muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which helps maintain a one-way flow of food. Proper functioning of the gastroesophageal junction is essential for preventing conditions like acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can cause discomfort and other health issues.
