Fukushima Daiichi is a nuclear power plant located in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. It consists of six reactors and began operations in the 1970s. The plant was designed to generate electricity but became widely known after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which caused a major nuclear accident.
The disaster led to the release of radioactive materials into the environment, prompting widespread evacuations and long-term concerns about safety and health. Cleanup and decommissioning efforts are ongoing, with significant challenges related to contaminated water and waste management still being addressed by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).
