Freon
Freon is a brand name for a group of chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). These substances are primarily used as refrigerants in air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and aerosol propellants. They are effective at absorbing heat, which makes them useful for cooling applications.
However, Freon has been linked to environmental issues, particularly ozone layer depletion. The release of CFCs into the atmosphere can lead to the breakdown of ozone molecules, which protect the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. As a result, many countries have phased out the use of Freon in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives.
