Freewheels
A "Freewheel" is a mechanical device commonly found in bicycles and some motorcycles. It allows the rear wheel to rotate freely when the pedals are not being turned, enabling coasting without pedaling. This feature is essential for smooth riding, especially on downhill slopes or when navigating turns.
The freewheel mechanism typically consists of a ratchet and pawl system, which engages when pedaling forward and disengages when coasting. This design helps prevent the pedals from spinning backward, providing a safer and more comfortable riding experience. The concept is also used in other applications, such as in certain types of gear systems and automotive transmissions.
