Freak Shows
Freak shows were entertainment exhibitions that featured people with unusual physical traits or abilities, often referred to as "human curiosities." These shows became popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing individuals with conditions like gigantism, dwarfism, or unique features such as extra limbs. They were typically held in circuses or traveling fairs.
While some performers embraced their roles and gained fame, many faced exploitation and discrimination. As societal views on disability and human rights evolved, freak shows declined in popularity, leading to their eventual disappearance. Today, discussions around disability rights focus on inclusion and respect rather than spectacle.
