Frank Hornby
Frank Hornby was an English inventor and toy manufacturer, best known for creating the popular construction toy sets called Meccano. Born on May 15, 1860, in Liverpool, he developed these sets in 1898, allowing children to build models using metal strips, gears, and other components. His innovative designs encouraged creativity and engineering skills among young builders.
In addition to Meccano, Hornby also invented the Hornby Railways model train system, which became a favorite among hobbyists. He founded the Meccano Ltd. company, which produced his toys and expanded their reach worldwide. Hornby passed away on September 21, 1936, but his legacy continues through his enduring toys.
