Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer and poet, best known for writing the lyrics to the national anthem of the United States, "The Star-Spangled Banner". He was born on August 1, 1779, in Maryland and lived during a time of significant national conflict, including the War of 1812.
Key wrote the anthem after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814. His poem, originally titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry", was later set to music and became a symbol of American resilience and patriotism. Key passed away on January 11, 1843.
