Fort Jesus
Fort Jesus is a historic fort located in Mombasa, Kenya. Built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596, it was designed to protect their trade route to India and safeguard the city from invaders. The fort's unique shape resembles a man lying on his back, which is how it got its name.
Over the years, Fort Jesus changed hands multiple times, being occupied by the Portuguese, Omani Arabs, and the British. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a museum, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that highlight the rich history of Mombasa and the region.
