Foramen Lacerum
The Foramen Lacerum is an irregularly shaped opening located at the base of the skull, specifically between the temporal bone, sphenoid bone, and occipital bone. It is not a true foramen, as it is mostly filled with cartilage and does not allow significant passage of major blood vessels or nerves. Instead, it serves as a landmark for surrounding structures.
Although the foramen itself does not transmit important structures, it is adjacent to the internal carotid artery and the jugular fossa. The area around the foramen lacerum is important in cranial anatomy, as it contributes to the overall structure and function of the skull.
