Fontan Procedure
The Fontan Procedure is a type of heart surgery designed for children with certain congenital heart defects, particularly those with a single functional ventricle. This procedure helps improve blood flow by connecting the veins that return blood from the body directly to the pulmonary arteries, bypassing the heart.
Typically performed in stages, the Fontan Procedure is usually done when the child is between 2 to 4 years old. After the surgery, the heart can pump blood more efficiently, allowing for better oxygenation and overall health. However, patients may require ongoing medical care and monitoring throughout their lives.
