First Down
In American football, a "first down" is a key objective for the offensive team. It occurs when the team advances the ball at least ten yards within four attempts, known as "downs." Successfully achieving a first down allows the team to retain possession of the ball and continue their offensive drive toward the end zone.
If the offensive team fails to gain the required ten yards after four downs, they must turn the ball over to the opposing team, often at the spot of the last play. The concept of a first down is crucial for maintaining momentum and scoring opportunities in the game.
