First Chimurenga
The First Chimurenga, also known as the First War of Independence, took place in what is now Zimbabwe between 1896 and 1897. It was a rebellion against British colonial rule, specifically targeting the British South Africa Company and its oppressive policies. The uprising was led by notable figures such as Ndebele leader Lobengula and Shona leaders, who sought to reclaim land and resist exploitation.
The conflict involved various indigenous groups, including the Ndebele and Shona, who united against colonial forces. Although the rebellion was ultimately suppressed, it marked a significant moment in the struggle for independence and laid the groundwork for future resistance movements, including the Second Chimurenga in the 1960s and 1970s.
