Fifty-Third Division
The Fifty-Third Division was a military formation of the British Army during World War I. It was primarily composed of soldiers from the North East of England and was known for its distinctive Tyneside Scottish and Tyneside Irish battalions. The division played a significant role in several key battles, including the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Arras.
Formed in 1914, the Fifty-Third Division was part of the larger New Army initiative, which aimed to recruit volunteers to bolster the British forces. The division was disbanded in 1919 after the war ended, having contributed to the Allied efforts on the Western Front.
