Fasciola hepatica
Fasciola hepatica is a parasitic flatworm, commonly known as the liver fluke. It primarily infects the livers of various mammals, including livestock like sheep and cattle, as well as humans. The fluke is typically found in freshwater environments, where it can complete its life cycle, often using snails as intermediate hosts.
Infection occurs when a host ingests contaminated water or plants. Once inside the host, Fasciola hepatica can cause a disease known as fascioliasis, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice. Treatment usually involves antiparasitic medications to eliminate the infection.
