Fall of Singapore
The Fall of Singapore occurred during World War II when Japanese forces invaded the British-held island in February 1942. Despite being considered a stronghold, Singapore fell to the Japanese on February 15, leading to the capture of around 80,000 British and Commonwealth troops. This event marked a significant defeat for the British Empire in the Asia-Pacific region.
The fall was largely attributed to poor military planning and underestimating the Japanese forces, who advanced through the Malay Peninsula. The event had lasting implications, including the loss of British prestige in Asia and the rise of nationalist movements in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
