FM Synthesis, or Frequency Modulation Synthesis, is a method of sound synthesis that creates complex audio signals by varying the frequency of one waveform with another. This technique allows for the generation of rich and dynamic sounds, making it popular in music production and electronic instruments.
Developed in the 1960s by John Chowning, FM Synthesis became widely known through its implementation in synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7. By using operators, which are oscillators that can modulate each other, musicians can create a wide range of tones, from simple bell sounds to complex textures.
