Eyak Language
The Eyak language is a critically endangered language that was traditionally spoken by the Eyak people in Alaska. It belongs to the Na-Dené language family and has unique phonetic and grammatical features. The last fluent native speaker, Marie Smith Jones, passed away in 2008, which has raised concerns about the preservation of the language.
Efforts to revitalize the Eyak language include language classes and the development of educational materials. Linguists and community members are working together to document the language and teach it to younger generations, aiming to keep the Eyak culture and heritage alive through language preservation.
