European otter
The European otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across Europe, except in some parts of Ireland and the northernmost regions. It has a streamlined body, webbed feet, and a thick fur coat that helps it stay warm in cold water. European otters primarily inhabit rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, where they hunt for fish, amphibians, and small mammals.
These otters are known for their playful behavior and social nature, often seen sliding down mud or snowbanks. They are excellent swimmers, using their powerful tails to propel themselves through the water. The European otter plays a vital role in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems.
