The European Hare (Lepus europaeus) is a large species of hare native to Europe and parts of Asia. It has long ears, powerful hind legs, and a distinctive brown or grayish coat that helps it blend into its surroundings. European Hares are primarily nocturnal and are known for their speed, capable of running up to 45 miles per hour to escape predators.
These hares inhabit a variety of environments, including grasslands, fields, and open woodlands. They are herbivorous, feeding on grasses, herbs, and crops. Unlike rabbits, European Hares do not burrow; instead, they create shallow nests called forms in tall grass for shelter and raising their young.
