European Crayfish
The European Crayfish, scientifically known as *Astacus astacus*, is a freshwater crustacean native to Europe. It typically inhabits rivers, lakes, and ponds, preferring clean, well-oxygenated waters with plenty of hiding spots like rocks and vegetation. This species is known for its distinctive large claws and can grow up to 25 centimeters in length.
European Crayfish are primarily nocturnal and feed on a diet of plants, insects, and small fish. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to recycle nutrients and providing food for various predators, including otters and herons. However, their populations have been threatened by habitat loss and the introduction of non-native species.
