Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
The Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, officially known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is a large hydroelectric dam located on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. Construction began in 2011, and the dam is designed to generate over 6,000 megawatts of electricity, making it one of the largest hydroelectric projects in Africa. The dam aims to provide power to millions of Ethiopians and support economic development.
The GERD has been a source of regional tension, particularly between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. Both Sudan and Egypt rely on the Nile River for water resources, and they have expressed concerns about how the dam will affect their water supply. Negotiations among the three countries continue to address these issues and seek a cooperative solution.
