Estonian national identity
Estonian national identity is deeply rooted in the country's history, language, and culture. The official language, Estonian, is a key element, belonging to the Finno-Ugric language family, which distinguishes it from most other European languages. The rich folklore, traditional music, and unique festivals, such as Jaanipäev (Midsummer), also play a significant role in shaping the national character.
The struggle for independence, particularly during the Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920) and the Singing Revolution in the late 1980s, has fostered a strong sense of unity and resilience among Estonians. This historical context, combined with a commitment to democracy and a modern, digital society, further defines the contemporary Estonian identity.
