Esophagogastroduodenoscopy
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a medical procedure that allows doctors to examine the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. A thin, flexible tube with a camera, called an endoscope, is inserted through the mouth and guided down the throat. This procedure helps diagnose conditions such as ulcers, inflammation, or tumors.
During an EGD, doctors can also take tissue samples for biopsy and perform treatments, such as removing polyps or dilating strictures. The procedure is usually done under sedation to ensure patient comfort. Recovery is typically quick, with most patients able to return home the same day.
