Esophageal Manometry
Esophageal Manometry is a diagnostic test that measures the pressure and movement of the muscles in the esophagus. During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a manometry catheter is inserted through the nose or mouth and into the esophagus. This catheter records the contractions of the esophageal muscles as the patient swallows.
The test helps doctors evaluate conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and achalasia, which can affect swallowing and cause discomfort. By analyzing the data collected, healthcare providers can determine the strength and coordination of the esophageal muscles, guiding appropriate treatment options.
