Homonym: Erethizon Dorsatum (Porcupine)
Erethizon dorsatum, commonly known as the North American porcupine, is a large rodent found primarily in the forests of North America. It has a distinctive coat covered in sharp quills, which serve as a defense mechanism against predators. These quills can easily detach when a porcupine feels threatened, embedding themselves in the attacker.
This species is primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, bark, and fruits. Erethizon dorsatum is mostly nocturnal and is known for its slow movement. They are excellent climbers, often found in trees, where they seek food and shelter.
