Epiphysis
The epiphysis is the rounded end of a long bone, located at the joint where it connects with another bone. It is covered with a smooth layer of cartilage, which helps reduce friction and absorb shock during movement. The epiphysis plays a crucial role in joint function and overall skeletal health.
In growing bones, the epiphysis is separated from the main shaft, or diaphysis, by a growth plate, known as the epiphyseal plate. This area is where new bone tissue forms, allowing the bone to lengthen during childhood and adolescence. Once growth is complete, the epiphyseal plate hardens and becomes the epiphyseal line.
