Enterobius vermicularis
Enterobius vermicularis, commonly known as the pinworm, is a small, white parasitic worm that primarily infects humans, especially children. It is about 8 to 13 millimeters long and is known for causing enterobiasis, a common intestinal infection. The adult female pinworm lays eggs around the anus, leading to itching and discomfort.
Transmission occurs through the ingestion of eggs, often via contaminated hands or surfaces. Good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing and cleaning of bedding, can help prevent infection. Treatment typically involves over-the-counter medications that eliminate the worms and their eggs from the body.
