Enron Scandal
The Enron Scandal was a major corporate fraud case that came to light in the early 2000s. Enron Corporation, an American energy company based in Houston, Texas, used accounting loopholes and special purpose entities to hide its debt and inflate profits. This deceptive practice misled investors and employees, leading to a significant loss of trust in the company.
In December 2001, Enron filed for bankruptcy, marking one of the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history. The scandal resulted in thousands of job losses and wiped out billions in shareholder value. It also led to the dissolution of Arthur Andersen, one of the five largest audit and accountancy partnerships in the world, due to its role in the scandal.
