English Armada
The term "English Armada" refers to the naval expedition launched by England in 1589, aimed at invading Spain and supporting the Portuguese against Spanish rule. This fleet was organized by Sir Francis Drake and was intended to capitalize on Spain's weakened position after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. However, the mission faced numerous challenges, including poor weather and lack of coordination, ultimately leading to its failure.
The English Armada consisted of around 180 ships, but many were lost due to storms and enemy action. The expedition did not achieve its objectives and is often seen as a missed opportunity for England to expand its influence in Europe. The failure of the English Armada contributed to the ongoing rivalry between England and Spain during the late 16th century.
