Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a medical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreas. It combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to visualize these areas. During the procedure, a flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the duodenum to access the bile ducts.
A contrast dye is then injected into the ducts, allowing for X-ray imaging to identify blockages, stones, or tumors. ERCP can also be used to remove gallstones, place stents, or take biopsies, making it a valuable tool in managing various gastrointestinal disorders.
