Elizabethan Religious Settlement
The Elizabethan Religious Settlement was a series of laws established during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th century. It aimed to unify the religious practices in England after years of conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism. The settlement included the Act of Supremacy (1559), which declared Elizabeth as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, and the Act of Uniformity, which set the order of worship and the use of the Book of Common Prayer.
This settlement sought to create a middle ground, known as the via media, allowing for some Catholic traditions while promoting Protestant beliefs. It was significant in establishing the Church of England's identity and reducing religious tensions, although it did not completely eliminate dissent from groups like the Puritans and Catholics.
