Electrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between two objects with different electrical charges. This can happen when two materials come into contact and then separate, causing an imbalance of electrons. For example, when you walk across a carpet and touch a metal doorknob, you might feel a small shock. This is ESD in action, as your body discharges the built-up static electricity.
ESD can be harmful, especially to sensitive electronic devices like computers and smartphones. Components such as microchips can be damaged by even a tiny discharge. To prevent ESD, people often use special tools and wear anti-static wristbands when handling electronics.
