Electromagnetic Launch System
An Electromagnetic Launch System (EMALS) is a technology used to launch aircraft from naval vessels, such as aircraft carriers. Unlike traditional steam catapults, EMALS uses electromagnetic forces to propel aircraft down a launch track. This system allows for smoother acceleration and can handle a wider range of aircraft weights and types.
EMALS is designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of aircraft launches. It requires less maintenance than steam systems and can be more easily integrated with modern aircraft technologies. The system is part of the U.S. Navy's efforts to enhance the capabilities of its fleet, particularly with the introduction of new carriers like the USS Gerald R. Ford.
