Egba Confederacy
The Egba Confederacy was a political alliance formed in the 19th century by the Egba people, a Yoruba ethnic group in present-day Nigeria. Established around 1854, it aimed to provide mutual protection and governance for its members, who had fled from the turmoil of the Yoruba Wars. The confederacy was characterized by a council of leaders who made decisions for the community.
The confederacy played a significant role in the region's stability and development. It established laws, maintained order, and facilitated trade among its members. The Egba capital, Abeokuta, became a center of commerce and culture, attracting various groups and contributing to the broader history of the Yoruba people.
