Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale
Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale, often referred to as Big Edie, was an American socialite born on October 7, 1892. She was the daughter of John Ewing Bouvier Jr. and Caroline H. Bouvier and became well-known for her eccentric lifestyle in the 20th century. Big Edie lived in the East Hampton estate known as Grey Gardens with her daughter, Edith Bouvier Beale, also known as Little Edie.
Big Edie and Little Edie gained fame through the 1975 documentary titled Grey Gardens, which showcased their unique living conditions and relationship. The film highlighted their reclusive life and the dilapidated state of their home, capturing the attention of the public and leading to a cult following. Their story has since inspired various adaptations, including a Broadway musical and a television film.
