Eastern Red-Backed Salamander
The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) is a small, terrestrial amphibian commonly found in the eastern United States and parts of Canada. It typically measures about 3 to 7 inches in length and is recognized by its distinctive red or orange stripe running down its back, which contrasts with its dark, grayish body. This species prefers moist, wooded environments and is often found under logs, rocks, or leaf litter.
These salamanders are important for their ecosystems, as they help control insect populations and serve as prey for various predators. They are primarily nocturnal and feed on small invertebrates, such as insects and worms. The Eastern Red-Backed Salamander is also notable for its ability to regenerate lost limbs, a trait shared with other members of the Amphibia class.
