Easter Island's Moai
Easter Island, known as Rapa Nui, is famous for its large stone statues called Moai. These statues were carved by the island's early inhabitants between 1400 and 1650 CE. The Moai represent ancestral figures and are believed to embody the spirits of important leaders.
The Moai are made from volcanic tuff and can weigh up to 75 tons. They are typically placed on stone platforms called Ahu, which also serve as burial sites. Today, the Moai are a significant cultural symbol and attract many tourists to Easter Island.
