Dynasty of Aviz
The Dynasty of Aviz was a royal house that ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1580. It was established after the Battle of Aljubarrota, where King John I of Portugal defeated the Castilian forces, securing Portuguese independence. The dynasty is known for its significant contributions to the Age of Discovery, including the exploration of new trade routes and territories.
Under the Aviz dynasty, notable monarchs like Prince Henry the Navigator promoted maritime exploration, leading to the discovery of parts of Africa, Asia, and Brazil. The dynasty ended with the death of King Sebastian in 1578, leading to a succession crisis and the eventual union with Spain.
