Dorsal Horn
The dorsal horn is a region located in the spinal cord, specifically in the gray matter of the posterior part. It plays a crucial role in processing sensory information, such as pain and temperature, that is transmitted from the body to the brain. Neurons in the dorsal horn receive signals from sensory receptors and relay them to higher brain centers for further interpretation.
In addition to sensory processing, the dorsal horn is involved in reflex actions. It contains interneurons that can facilitate quick responses to stimuli without the need for direct brain involvement. This allows for rapid reactions, such as pulling away from a hot surface, ensuring the body can respond swiftly to potential harm.
