Distal Interphalangeal Joint
The Distal Interphalangeal Joint (DIP joint) is a hinge joint located at the tip of the fingers and toes. It connects the distal phalanx, which is the bone at the end of each digit, to the middle phalanx in fingers or the proximal phalanx in toes. This joint allows for flexion and extension, enabling movements like bending and straightening the fingers and toes.
In the human hand, each finger has a DIP joint, while the toes also have corresponding DIP joints. The proper functioning of the DIP joint is essential for activities that require fine motor skills, such as typing or playing musical instruments, as well as for balance and walking.
