Distal Interphalangeal
The distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints are the hinge joints located at the tips of the fingers and toes. Each finger has three phalanges (bones), and the DIP joint connects the distal phalanx (the bone at the tip) to the middle phalanx. These joints allow for flexion and extension, enabling movements like gripping and pinching.
In the toes, the DIP joints connect the distal phalanx to the proximal phalanx. Similar to the fingers, they play a crucial role in balance and walking. Injuries or conditions affecting the DIP joints, such as arthritis, can lead to pain and reduced mobility in the hands and feet.
