Distal Convoluted Tubule
The Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT) is a part of the nephron, the functional unit of the kidney. It follows the Loop of Henle and is involved in the reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and water. The DCT plays a crucial role in regulating electrolyte balance and blood pressure by adjusting the composition of urine.
In addition to reabsorption, the DCT is also responsible for the secretion of certain substances, such as potassium and hydrogen ions. This process helps maintain the body's acid-base balance. Hormones like aldosterone influence the activity of the DCT, further regulating fluid and electrolyte homeostasis.
