Dismal Swamp
The Dismal Swamp is a large wetland located in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Historically, the Dismal Swamp has been significant for its role in the Underground Railroad, where escaped slaves sought refuge. Today, it is protected as part of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which offers recreational opportunities such as hiking, birdwatching, and kayaking.
