Diphyllobothrium latum
Diphyllobothrium latum is a type of tapeworm, specifically known as the broad fish tapeworm. It can grow up to 10 meters long and is typically found in the intestines of humans and other mammals. This parasite is transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish that carry its larvae.
Infection with Diphyllobothrium latum can lead to a condition called diphyllobothriasis, which may cause symptoms like abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and weight loss. While many infected individuals may remain asymptomatic, severe cases can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, potentially resulting in anemia.
